About Albatros Expeditions Cruises

Albatros Travel was founded in 1986 by Soren Rasmussen, a young biologist with an appetite for exploring the world. Based in Copenhagen, Denmark, he originally organized tented safari vacations in Kenya for fellow Scandinavians.

Today Albatros -- taken from the Danish spelling of the globetrotting albatross bird -- offers global land-based tours and cruises to international travelers. It remains a family-owned company with Rasmussen as chairman today and his wife and children part of the management team. In 2017, Albatros Expeditions was founded to handle the polar expedition cruise side of operation and has two ships; Ocean Victory launched in 2021 and Ocean Albatros which debuted in 2023.

The parent company also has offices in Kenya and Tanzania and in addition to the two cruise ships owns several hotels, three bush camps, a nature reserve with four country lodges and a bus company. In 1999 it further expanded its adventure travels by organizing marathons and running events around world including The Great Wall Marathon in China. It currently offers 10 races, in nine countries throughout the year and each event is packaged with a land tour.

Albatros Expeditions Cruises Tips, Activities, and Overview

Who goes on Albatros Expeditions cruise ships?

The line appeals to well-traveled active adventurers from English-speaking countries looking to explore remote destinations that are inaccessible on mainstream cruises. You need to be in reasonably good health and ambulatory to make the most of these expedition sailings and understand that itineraries can be affected by weather conditions and subject to change.

Do I have to dress up on a Albatros Expeditions cruise?

No. The dress code onboard is casual and you can leave your ties, jackets and evening dresses at home. Comfortable, breathable, waterproof and windproof outdoor clothing is required for shore excursions and Zodiac tours and Albatros Expeditions provides a useful packing list. All passengers receive an expedition parka, which is theirs to keep, and waterproof boots are loaned free of charge for the duration of the sailing.

Is everything free on Albatros Expeditions cruises?

No. Fares included all meals, house wine, beer and soda with dinner, welcome and farewell cocktails, 24-hour tea and coffee, Zodiac landings and excursions as listed on the itinerary and shuttle transfers to the ship from Ushuaia city center on embarkation and to the city center or airport after the sailing. All other drinks, optional excursions such as kayaking, spa treatments, laundry, Wi-Fi and gratuities (recommended USD$14 per person, per day and automatically charged to the onboard account) are extra.

What are Albatros Expeditions’s most popular activities?

Nature is the star of the show on Albatros Expeditions' voyages and tours are designed to showcase this to the full. They range from landings at national parks, such as Torres del Paine in Patagonia and the 17th century whaling town of Smeerenburg on Arctic itineraries to Zodiac excursions for close-up views of fjords and glacial landscapes.

Back onboard the ship the panoramic lounge and outdoor viewing platforms provide opportunities to spot polar bears and other wildlife, while expert lectures provide an in-depth insight into destinations being visited.

Best for: Open-minded travelers looking to explore remote regions on a comfortable ship where the accent is on discovery

Not for: Anyone looking for a traditional cruise experience on a vessel with formal nights, entertainment, multiple dining options or luxury amenities

Ocean Albotros European Ports Debut

The ship requires two cards, one for your room and one for checking out/on the ship, Seems odd they could get it all on one card as most ships have. However, the entire ship was chartered by Arrangements Abroad, whose team had a great deal of experience in many of the stops.Read More

Bad times good stories

On our way there a passenger fell ill so we had to head back to the Falklands, and the prediction was we’d lose 2 days in South Georgia and 2 days in Antarctica (we planned 4 in each) but we’d go as fast as possible back to maximize our time there. We embarked on the 19 day cruise to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and Antarctica, planned to travel in that order.Read More
